Nestled in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, Interlaken is a Swiss town that’s renowned for its prime location between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. This picturesque town serves as the main transport gateway to the mountains and lakes of the region, with two main stations: Interlaken Ost (East) and Interlaken West. Understanding the differences between these two can help you navigate your travels more smoothly.
Interlaken Ost
Interlaken Ost is the larger and more frequently used of the two stations and located in the east of Interlaken. It’s the hub for trains heading to the higher regions of the Bernese Oberland, including Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, and the Jungfrau Region. If you’re looking to explore the high Alps, take scenic train journeys like the Bernese Oberland Railway or the Jungfrau Railway, or if you plan to visit Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch, this is your starting point.
If you want to go on a boat tour on Lake Brienz, use this station. The station for Harder Kulm is also only a short walk away.
Interlaken West
Interlaken West is closer to the center of town and is the first station you’ll encounter if coming from Bern or Thun. It’s conveniently located within walking distance of many hotels, making it a great option for travelers who are staying in Interlaken itself. If you’re interested in taking a boat tour on Lake Thun, Interlaken West is just a short walk from the docks.
This station is smaller and has fewer facilities compared to Ost, but it’s perfect for those looking to explore the western parts of Interlaken or heading to destinations like Thun or the Simmental. The area around Interlaken West has a charming vibe, with cozy cafes, local shops, and a more laid-back atmosphere.
Both stations are connected by train (5 mins) and bus lines (10 mins). You can also walk (20-30 mins).
