You keep seeing the name Männlichen pop up when planning your trip to the Jungfrau Region? There’s a reason. Männlichen gives you some of the best mountain views in Switzerland – and it’s surprisingly easy to get to.
In this guide, I’ll show you exactly what Männlichen is, how to get there, what to do once you’re up, and a few tips you might not find elsewhere.
What Is Männlichen?
Männlichen is a 2,300 meter mountain ridge sitting right between Grindelwald and Wengen. It gives you incredible views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, and on clear days, you’ll even spot Lake Thun in the distance.
One of the biggest reasons it’s so popular? Accessibility. You can reach it easily by cable car from either Grindelwald or Wengen, making it a very doable day trip – even with kids.
What Can You Do at the Top?
1. Take in the Views
The views start the moment you step off the lift. You’re looking directly at the north face of the Eiger, and the whole Jungfrau Region unfolds around you.
2. Walk the Royal Walk
This short but steep path leads up to a crown sculpture and a higher viewpoint. It takes about 15 minutes and rewards you with a full 360° panorama.
3. Hike the Panorama Trail
This is one of the easiest ridge hikes in the region. The trail to Kleine Scheidegg is 4.5 km and mostly flat, following the ridge with mountain views the entire way. In winter, it’s groomed for winter hiking too.
4. Meet the Cows
In summer, Männlichen turns into grazing ground. You’ll likely hear the sound of cowbells before you even see them – it adds a special kind of atmosphere.
5. Playgrounds and Family Fun
There’s a large mountain playground near the top station – great for families. And the Lieselotte Trail, themed after a children’s book cow, takes you from the summit down to the middle station on the Grindelwald side. Along the way, there are interactive activity stations for kids.
6. Eat (or Stay) at the Top
Right at the top station is a restaurant with a terrace and panoramic views. And – not many people know this – you can actually sleep up here. There’s a guesthouse right above the restaurant if you’re after a peaceful mountain sunrise.
7. Sledging in Winter
In winter, you can sledge down from Männlichen to Grindelwald – sledges are available to rent right at the top.
How to Get to Männlichen
There are two ways:
From Wengen
A 5-minute cable car ride straight from the center of the village. In summer, you can even ride on the roof of the cabin for an open-air experience (called the Royal Ride).
From Grindelwald
Start at Grindelwald Terminal, then take a 20-minute gondola up. The views get better the higher you go.
From Interlaken
Either train to Lauterbrunnen (then Wengen), or train to Grindelwald Terminal. The full trip takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your route.

Best Time to Visit
Männlichen is mainly a summer and winter destination:
Summer (mid-June to October) – all hiking trails are open and the cows are usually out grazing.
Winter – it’s part of the ski area, but you can also enjoy sledging, winter hiking, and the restaurant.
Shoulder season – the lifts close briefly in spring and autumn for maintenance. Always check schedules before your trip.
My Take
Männlichen is maybe my favourite place in the Jungfrau Region.
It’s not packed with people, yet you get postcard-perfect views. You can go for a relaxed visit or spend the whole day hiking. It’s also one of those places where you walk away feeling like you’ve found something others missed – even though it’s right in the middle of everything.
