So, I ventured up to a place that’s a bit of a hidden gem in the Swiss Alps, and honestly, it blew my mind. I’m talking about Schynige Platte, this absolutely stunning spot that’s like stepping into a live-action postcard of what you imagine Switzerland to be. Picture this: you’re sitting in an old-timey train, chugging up a mountain, and every turn brings a view that’s more breathtaking than the last. That’s Schynige Platte for you.
This place isn’t just about the views, though they’re definitely worth the trip alone. It’s about the vibe, the fresh air, and the sheer joy of being in the middle of the Swiss Alps, looking out at peaks like the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. And the wildflowers! There’s this alpine garden up there with over 650 types of plants.
I went there not really knowing what to expect and ended up having one of those days that make you grateful for the great outdoors. So, I thought I’d share a bit about why Schynige Platte should be on your radar if you’re ever in the Interlaken area and looking for an adventure that’s a little off the beaten path.

Getting to Schynige Platte
Wilderswil
Getting to Schynige Platte is part of the adventure and it’s super straightforward, whether you’re coming by train or driving yourself. Your starting point is going to be Wilderswil, a village right next to Interlaken and it’s easily accessible. If you’re hopping on a train at Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, you pass by Wilderswil train station. And if you’re driving, no stress about parking—there’s a cheap outdoor car park nearby. So, whether you’re coming by train or car, getting to Schynige Platte is easy, enjoyable, and filled with anticipation for the alpine wonders that await.
Cogwheel Train
Now, the real magic starts with the train ride up to Schynige Platte. This isn’t your average commute; it’s a scenic journey that lasts about an hour. Here’s a pro tip: grab a seat on the right-hand side of the train. Trust me, you’ll want to have your camera ready for the unbeatable views of Interlaken and the surrounding lakes and mountains. It’s like getting a sneak peek of the breathtaking scenery that awaits you at the top.
Oh, and don’t worry about reserving a seat in advance. It’s pretty laid-back, and you can usually find a spot without any hassle. Just hop on and enjoy the ride. The views of Interlaken as you climb higher are something else—seeing the town nestled between the lakes from above is a view you won’t forget anytime soon.
What to do at Schynige Platte
Once you reach the top of Schynige Platte, you’ll find yourself surrounded by some of the most stunning alpine scenery Switzerland has to offer. Here’s what you can do to make the most of your visit:
Catch an Alphorn Performance
Depending on the day and seasons of your visit, you might be lucky enough to catch a traditional Alphorn performance. It takes place just as everyone arrives at Schynige Platte.
Explore the Alpine Garden
Don’t miss the chance to wander through the Alpine Garden, where over 650 species of plants thrive. It’s a unique opportunity to see a variety of alpine flora in their natural habitat (provided you go in summer and not in fall like I did).
Hit the Hiking Trails
Schynige Platte is a gateway to numerous hiking trails, catering to all levels of fitness and adventure. Whether you opt for the leisurely Panorama Trail (I call it a ridge hike) that offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks or you can even go for a long hike all the way to Grindelwald First!
Enjoy the Panoramic Views
On the Panorama Trail you will pass by two spectacular viewing platforms provides breathtaking 360-degree views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, as well as the lakes of Thun and Brienz. These viewing platforms are called Daube (easy to reach) and Oberberghorn (you need to be good on foot and have sense of balance to climb). It’s the perfect spot to take in the majestic beauty of the Bernese Oberland.
Grab a Bite at the Mountain Restaurant
After exploring, relax and refuel at the mountain-top restaurant. Enjoy traditional Swiss dishes while soaking in the alpine atmosphere and the incredible views. I chose a typically Swiss Apfelstudel (apple strudel). Did I say Swiss? I meant… Well you know in the area of Austria, Southern Germany and Switzerland the food sort of overlaps…
Photography
With its unparalleled views and natural beauty, Schynige Platte is a photographer’s dream. Here’s a good place to bring lenses of 50mm+!
Relax and Take It All In
Sometimes, the best thing to do is simply sit back and admire the view. Find a quiet spot to reflect on the natural beauty surrounding you. The peace and tranquility of the mountains have a way of putting everything into perspective. You will have complete quite and you will only hear the wind and the insects and no noise (except the occasional F/A-18 fighter jet blasting by)!
Stay Overnight
Yes, if you fall in love so much with Schynige Platte that there’s no way you want to leave, you can stay overnight at a hotel on the mountain!
Practical Information
- Schynige Platte is not a year-round attraction because of the snow. Therefore it usually only opens mid-June and closes in mid-October. Summers in the Swiss Alps are shorter that elsewhere!
- For you to see timetables, tickets and other infos check out the Official Schynige Platte Website.
- I recommend to reserve 4-5 hours of your day for this activity!
- If you like cogwheel train rides, you might also check out the ones riding up Kleine Scheidegg! Wengernalp Railway
Summary
Schynige Platte is maybe the least popular attraction of the Jungfrau Region, but in my eyes it’s the most authentic and peaceful one for you to visit. This is a place where locals that want to enjoy Switzerland feel right at home. I will come back, again and again and again!
