Perched high above the picturesque Lake Thun near Interlaken, the St Beatus Caves (St. Beatus-Höhlen) are among Switzerland’s most captivating natural attractions. This extensive cave system, situated within the impressive Niederhorn massif, offers a magical underground adventure that mesmerizes visitors of all ages.
The Waterfalls Outside the Caves
As you approach the St Beatus Caves, you’ll be greeted by the sight and sound of stunning waterfalls cascading down the mountainside. These waterfalls, fed by the underground streams within the caves, create a spectacular display as the water tumbles over rocks and cliffs before plunging into the valley below. The flow of water originates from deep within the cave system, adding to the mystical allure of the location. The sight of the waterfalls, combined with the lush surrounding greenery and the calm atmosphere, makes for a breathtaking and memorable experience even before you step foot inside the caves. The access to these waterfalls up and until the entrance of the caves is free!
Exploring the Caves
Visitors can explore about one kilometer of the cave system on a sometimes well-lit, secure path that winds through grottos, chambers and gorges. As you begin your journey, the cool air and dim lighting create an atmosphere of mystery and anticipation. The path takes you deep into the heart of the mountain, where you’ll encounter a variety of geological wonders.
Along the way, you’ll marvel at impressive stalactites and stalagmites that have taken thousands of years to form. These formations come in all shapes and sizes, some resembling delicate icicles hanging from the ceiling, while others rise majestically from the floor like ancient columns. The intricate patterns and textures of the rock formations are a testament to the slow, steady work of nature over millennia.
The tour involves an 87-meter elevation change and 297 steps, making it a bit of a hike, but the spectacular sights are well worth the effort. As you ascend and descend through the cave system, you’ll traverse narrow passageways that open up into expansive chambers, each with its own unique features and story to tell. The tour takes approximately 60 minutes, offering a memorable journey into the heart of the mountain.
In addition to the natural beauty, you’ll learn about the fascinating legends and myths associated with the St Beatus Caves. According to local lore, the caves were once home to a fearsome dragon, which was vanquished by the monk Beatus, giving the caves their name. This blend of natural wonder and mythological intrigue adds an extra layer of enchantment to your visit.
